The Night Beckons

“You may have a point there,” said Vi, shrugging. “But it’s getting dark and we need light. How about some candles?”

You and the Countess take two candleholders, each of which could carry five candlewicks. By now the sun has long dipped below the horizon and the entire room is pitch-black: until ten candles are lit, and you and Vi place the holders on the elegant rectangular coffee table. The atmosphere is contemplative. Vi sits down again and stares at you, her vampiric eyes thoughtful.

“I remember when we were still foes. Now here you are, keeping me company until Tess returns. How does that feel?” she asked. It’s not easy to tell if she was being wry or genuinely curious.
